[retina-derived growth factor-alpha] This factor was isolated initially from bovine retina. It was called also EDGF (eye-derived growth factor). The factor is a mitogen for endothelial cells and murine 3T3 fibroblasts. The factor also supports angiogenesis. It promotes the outgrowth of neurites in rat pheochromocytoma cells (see: PC12). This activity is potentiated by heparin (see also: HBGF [heparin binding growth factors]). The factor is identical with aFGF.
