(approved gene symbol) [quiescin Q6 sulfhydryl oxidase 1; Quiescin sulfhydryl oxidase 1] The protein is being referred to as quiescin Q6 (abbr. QSCN6 or Q6) or Sulfhydryl oxidase 1. The gene structure has been described by Coppock et al (1998). QSOX1 is a member of the sulfhydryl oxidase family. These enzymes insert disulfide bonds into reduced proteins by reducing molecular oxygen to hydrogen peroxide, or may act as secreted oxidases to counteract reductants in the cellular milieu (Thorpe and Coppock, 2007; Chakravarthi et al, 2007). For a related protein see also: QSOX2.
The QSOX1 gene was identified originally as one of the quiescins, the expression of which is upregulated quiescent cells.
