PED

[phosphoprotein enriched in diabetes] This protein has been identified by differential display techniques, demonstrating that is overexpressed in fibroblasts from type 2 diabetics as compared to non-diabetic individuals (Condorelli et al, 1998). The protein is overexpressed also in skeletal muscle and adipose tissues. Enforced expression of the protein in differentiating L6 skeletal muscle cells increases the content of Glut1 transporters on the plasma membrane and inhibits glucose transport induced by insulin. The effects of PED overexpression are reversed by blocking protein kinase C activity.

The protein has been described independently as PEA15 [phosphoprotein enriched in astrocytes 15]. The PEA15 ... ... ... ... ... Subscribe to continue reading! ... ...
