[Plasminogen activator inhibitor] also PAI-1 [plasminogen activator inhibitor-1]. This protein is known also as endothelial plasminogen activator inhibitor (as opposed to placental plasminogen activator inhibitor, which is PAI-2). PAI has been identified independently as MSF (monocyte suppressor factor) and mesosecrin.
PAI-1 is a member of the serine protease inhibitor (Serpins) superfamily (Myöhänen and Vaheri, 2004) and suppresses fibrinolysis by inhibiting the activity of plasminogen activator. The protein is known also as SERPINE1 [serpin peptidase inhibitor clade E member 1].
