Murine osteocrin cDNA encodes a secreted protein of 103 amino acids (11.4 kDa) (Thomas et al, 2003).
The protein appears to act as a soluble regulator of osteoblasts. It is expressed specifically by cbfa-1 positive, osteocalcin negative osteoblasts. Expression is downregulated by treatment with 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D3. The protein inhibits mineralisation and reduces expression of osteocalcin and alkaline phosphatase. Bord et al (2005) have reported expression of osteocrin in human osteoblasts
