sometimes abbr. Opl cells. These cells (Opalski, 1930) are found in the brains of patients with Wilson's disease, a familial neurological disorder involving the brain and liver secondary to altered copper metabolism.
Opalski cells are fairly large, rounded cells with fine granular cytoplasm that show periodic acid-Schiff positive staining for cytoplasmic granules and an irregularly shaped small nucleus. These cells appear to be derived from glia, resembling large protoplasmic astrocytes that may represent degenerating astrocytes (Opalski, 1930; Bertrand et al, 2001).
