[olfactomedin-like protein 3] This protein is a member of a protein family known as Olfactomedins and has been identified independently by Zeng et al (2004) as a secreted glycoprotein, termed hOLF44 (OLF44) by the authors, who suggested possible functions in human placental and embryonic development.
The Xenopus laevis counterpart of OLFML3, termed ONT1 [Olfactomedin-noelin-tiarin factor 1], has been reported to play a role in dorsal axial formation during vertebrate embryogenesis. The ONT1 protein stabilizes axial formation by restricting the activity of another patterning molecule,
