[osteoclastogenesis inhibitory factor] This factor was found in the conditioned medium of human IMR 90 embryonic lung fibroblasts (Tsuda et al, 1997). OCIF is a heparin binding basic glycoprotein and exists in monomeric (60 kDa) and homodimeric forms. The murine OCIF gene spans 29 kb and contains five exons. Four cysteine-rich domains and two death domain homologous regions characterized in human OCIF are rigidly conserved in mouse OCIF (Mizuno et al, 1998).
OCIF has been shown to be identical with OPG (Osteoprotegerin) (Yasuda et al, 1998) and is being referred to also as OCIF/OPG
