This peptide has been identified by Tournaire et al (2004) after phage display library screening for peptides that block the TIE-2 receptor. NLLMAAS completely abolishes the binding of the angiogenesis factors angiopoietin-1 and angiopoietin-2 to this receptor. NLLMAAS specifically suppresses both Angiopoietin-1-induced extracellular signal-regulated kinase ERK activity and migration in human umbilical vein endothelial cells. In vivo, this peptide inhibits angiogenesis in the Chicken chorioallantoic membrane assay.
