A family with several subgroups of highly conserved cytosolic serine/threonine protein kinases known also as MAP kinases (mitogen-activated protein kinases, abbr. also MAPK). For details see: ERK1/2 [extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2].
ERKs are activated and tyrosine- or threonine-phosphorylated in response to a wide variety of extracellular signals, including osmotic stress, heat shock, pro-inflammatory cytokines, hormones, and mitogens. The respective signals are transduced often via ligand binding to receptors with tyrosine kinase
