[Memphis blood group antigens]
The Memphis blood group antigen is a polymorphic form of the human erythrocyte band 3 protein, which results from a point mutation Lys56 to Glu within the cytoplasmic domain (Schawalder et al, 2006). Memphis variant II carries the polymorphism Pro854 to Leu within the membrane-bound domain in addition to Lys56 to Glu. It is distinguished from variant I and normal band 3 protein by the ease with which it can be labelled by H2DIDS (4,4'-diisothiocyanato-2,2'-dihydrostilbene disulfonate). The Memphis variant II may be associated also with the presence of the Diego blood group antigen Di(a) on erythrocytes (Spring et al, 1992; Bruce et al, 1994; Salhany et al, 1996).
