[Diego blood group antigens]
The Diego blood group antigen (Diego antigen) is located on the erythrocyte band 3 protein (EPB3 gene or SLC4A1). There are two alleles, designated Di(a) (Levine et al, 1956), and Di(b) (Tatarsky et al, 1959). These alleles are caused by a single amino acid substitution at position 854 (Di(b) = proline); Di(a) = leucine) (Bruce et al, 1994). Di(a) may be associated with the Memphis blood group antigen.
In the nomenclature of CD antigens the protein has been given the designation CD233
