[melanocyte growth factor] This factor is a heparin binding growth factor (see also: HBGF) isolated from human epidermis. It promotes the growth of melanocytes. The activity of this factor can be neutralized completely by antibodies directed against bFGF. MeGF is probably identical with bFGF (Horikawa et al, 1991). A biochemically uncharacterized potent growth factor for melanocytes isolated from bovine brain by Wilkins et al (1985) and termed MGF [melanocyte growth factor] most likely is also bFGF.
