Magainins (23 amino acids) constitute a family of peptides isolated from the skin of the African clawed frog Xenopus laevis. Magainin-1 (GIGKFLHSAGKFGKAFVGEIMKS) and Magainin-2 (GIGKFLHSAKKFGKAFVGEIMNS) are closely related peptides that differ by two substitutions (Zasloff, 1987).
