PGLa

[acronym for peptide with amino-terminal glycine and carboxy-terminal leucinamide] Based on sequence (Andreu et al, 1985) and bioactivities (Soravia et al, 1988) this peptide from Xenopus laevis skin secretions belongs to the family of antimicrobial peptides known as magainins. PGLa [GMASKAGAIAGKIAKVALKALamide] is produced also by cells in the gastric mucosa (see: granular multinucleated cells).

Westerhoff et al (1989) have reported that PGLa dissipates the electric potential across various energy-transducing membranes and thus uncouples respiration from other free-energy-requiring processes.
