[Molluscum contagiosum virus MC53L protein] This protein is encoded by an open reading frame of Molluscum contagiosum virus, a common human poxvirus that causes small papular skin lesions that persist for long periods without signs of inflammation. The protein functions as a decoy receptor that binds to human and murine IL18 with high affinity and inhibits IL18 mediated IFN-gamma production in a dose-dependent manner.
A related protein with the same biological activity is MC54L. For other viral proteins binding to IL18 see also: ectromelia poxvirus p13, D7L, vIL18BP [
