[myelin-associated glycoprotein] MAG protein is expressed by myelin-forming cells (oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells) (Yim et al, 1995; Trapp et al, 1989). It is a membrane glycoprotein (Spagnol et al, 1989; Sato et al, 1989) belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily of proteins (Lai et al, 1987). Alternative splicing produces two isoforms with different carboxyterminal ends, designated L-MAG and S-MAG (large and short isoform, respectively), or p67MAG and p72MAG (Tropak et al, 1988).
