Murine gammaherpesvirus 68 infects and establishes a lifelong latent infection and chronic vasculitis in mice. The M3 gene found in its genome encodes a protein of 44 kDa, gammaherpesvirus 68 M3 protein, that is secreted during productive infection. M3 protein is the product of an immediate-early transcript and is secreted abundantly during acute infection (van Berkel et al, 1999).
