Biologically inactive forms of cytokines. A variety of extracellular or membrane-bound proteinases are involved in the activation of latent growth factors and cytokines. These proteases may also activate other proteases that, in turn, affect the biological abilities of growth factors in a free solluble form or in a form bound to the extracellular matrix.
Some factors, e. g., TGF-beta (see: L-TGF), exist as high molecular weight complexes from which biologically active molecules can be released by dissociating the complex.
