The gene encoding this seven-membrane spanning protein (316 amino acids) (termed lifeguard) has been identified in a screen for molecules that inhibit the apoptotic signal from the FAS receptor (Somia et al, 1999). LFG is a member of a highly preserved protein family that also comprises BAX inhibitor-1, and GAAP [Golgi anti-apoptotic protein]. In some databanks LFG is being referred to also as LFG2 [lifeguard 2]. LFG has been identified independently in the rat as NMP35 [neuromembrane protein 35; neural membrane protein 35].
