[inflammasomes]
a name given to a large, signal-induced multiprotein complex that mediates the activation of pro-inflammatory caspases. As described originally, the inflammasome is composed of caspase-1, caspase-5, PYCARD, and NALP1. Martinon et al (2002) have shown that complexes depleted of PYCARD can no longer activate pro-inflammatory caspases and process the proform of IL1-beta. A dominant-negative form of PYCARD blocks maturation of IL1-beta induced in differentiated THP-1 cells by bacterial lipopolysaccharides.
