[IL1 receptor-associated kinase] IRAK has been renamed IRAK1 following the identification of IRAK2.
IRAK is a serine/threonine protein kinase associating with the IL1 type 1 receptor (Cao et al, 1996). It plays an essential proximal role in coordinating multiple IL1 signaling pathways for optimal induction of cellular responses. IRAK is phosphorylated rapidly when IL1 binds to the receptor (Cao et al, 1996). Signaling of IL1 has been shown to involve association of IRAK with TRAF6 (see: TRAF) (Cao et al, 1996). IRAK activation is a necessary step in the IL1 signaling pathway involving activation of the transcription factor NF-kappa-B
