[interleukin-40] This name has been given to the protein encoded by C17orf99 [chromosome 17 open reading frame 99] (Catalan-Dibene J et al, 2017). IL40 is a secreted protein that is present only in mammalian genomes. The protein (∼27 kDa) is unrelated to other cytokine families. The protein is expressed in bone marrow and fetal liver and its expression is induced in peripheral B-cells upon cell activation. In the bone marrow, IL40 is expressed by CD45(-) cells, a population that represents mostly mature stromal cells characterised as CD45(-), lineage(-), CD51(-)
