Cytokine families
[cytokine family]
The term cytokine family or growth factor family usually refers to various discrete groups of growth factors or cytokines that are related mainly in terms of primary structure (see also: gene family). Individual members of one family usually share little sequence similarity with members of other families and the overall sequence similarity among members of one group may also vary widely.
• structural peculiarities such as distinct spacings of certain amino acids (C-Chemokines, CC-Chemokines, CXC-Chemokines, CX3C-Chemokines)
• common overal topology (Cystine knot growth factor family, helical cytokines)
