abbr. HSF (a term with multiple meanings). This biochemically uncharacterized factor of approximately 10-12 kDa is found in the conditioned medium of the human thymus cell hybridoma, 8E-24. It is a potent immunosuppressive factor which inhibits polyclonal immunoglobulin (Ig) production. The suppression is dependent on monocytes in that its suppressive activity for Ig production is not observed in cultures of lymphocytes depleted of monocytes and is restored by addition of monocytes.
