[hepcidin JF1] The cDNA encoding this antimicrobial peptide (sequence: DVKCGFCCKDGGCGVCCNF) resembling hepcidin has been cloned from Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) (Hirono et al, 2005). A related protein (51 % amino acid identity) is Hep-JF2. Sequence similarity also exists with Tilapia hepcidins. The peptide is one of several the expression of which is upregulated in peripheral blood leukocytes in vaccinated and non-vaccinated Japanese flounder in the course of infection with the pathogen Edwardsiella tarda (Matsuyama T et al, 2007).
