abbr. HEPC. Hepcidin is a cysteine-rich antimicrobial peptide isolated from human urine and produced in liver hepatocytes (Park et al, 2001; Pigeon et al, 2001). The protein is also referred to as LEAP-1 [liver-expressed antimicrobial peptide, liver-expressed antimicrobial peptide-1] (Krause et al, 2000), or HAMP [Hepcidin antimicrobial peptide]. Kulaksiz et al (2005) have reported that Hepcidin is expressed by renal epithelial cells.
