The cDNA for this human protein has been cloned by King et al (1994). The rat counterpart has been termed Rel-N1. Hel-N2 and Rel-N2 are splice variants extended at the N-terminus (King, 1994). Mel-N1 is the murine counterpart of Hel-N1 (Abe et al, 1996). Mel-N1 and splice variants (Mel-N2, Mel-N3) have been shown to be expressed in the nervous system and also in adipocytes (Abe et al, 1996; Qi et al, 2002).
