This highly differentiated cell line has been established from a human colon carcinoma (Watkins and Sanger, 1977). The cells induce bone formation in the stroma when grown in athymic nude mice.
The cells express the met oncogene and have been used to study the effect of HGF (scatter factor) (Jiang et al, 1993). The effects of HGF are measured by determining cell motility, as measured by dissociation from carrier beads or by scattering of cell colonies (see also: Motogenic cytokines). Scattering effects induced by HGF are blocked by antibodies directed against HGF.
