This is the human homolog of the Drosophila melanogaster gene spinster. The approved gene symbol is SPNS1 [spinster homolog 1].
HSpin1 binds to the anti-apoptotic proteins BCL2 and BCLxL, but not to pro-apoptotic BAX BAK in cells treated with TNF-alpha. Exogenous expression of HSpin1 causes cell death by apoptosis without inducing a release of cytochrome C from mitochondria. This process can be prevented by overexpression of BCLxL.
