[Helicobacter pylori HP986 protein] This protein of approximately 29 kDa is encoded in the genome of Helicobacter pylori. It is detected in patient isolates associated with peptic ulcer and gastric carcinoma. HP986 induces significant levels of TNF-alpha and IL8 in cultured human macrophages. Recombinant HP986 also induces cell death by apoptosis of cultured macrophages, which involves induction of TNFR1 and FAS expression. The independent pro-inflammatory and apoptotic responses triggered by HP986 point to a role of this protein possibly as a survival strategy to gain niche through inflammation and to counter the activated
