[Helicobacter pylori gene HP1248] This gene is encoded in the genome of Helicobacter pylori. It has been shown to encode a 3'-to-5' exoribonuclease. Tsao et al (2009) have defined six virulence-related genes the expression of which is downregulated posttranscriptionally by HP1248, including the motility-related genes HP1192 and flaB, the chemotaxis-related gene cheY, and the apoptosis-inducing genes HP0175, cagA, and HP1118. Motility and apoptosis induction are increased in a H. pylori HP1248 deletion mutant. The expression level of HP1248 mRNA changes dramatically in response to a variety of altered environmental conditions, including pH and temperature, suggesting that HP1248 also plays a role in environmental sensing apart from regulating virulent phenotypes.
