[Helicobacter pylori cheY] CheY is a chemotactic response regulator protein found in Helicobacter pylori. The protein is encoded by one gene in the sro operon [stress-responsive operon] (gene HP1067; hence Helicobacter pylori HP1067 protein) (Beier et al, 1997). cheY is a flagellar motor switch protein that modulates the rotation direction of bacterial flagellar motors.
cheY plays an important role in the colonization and infection of Helicobacter pylori. Knock-out mutants show that CheY is essential for bacterial motility and virulence. cheY1 mutants are unable to colonize mice but survive long enough to elicit an immune response (Foynes et al, 2000).
Chemotaxis regulation in Helicobacter pylori resembles that found also in Escherichia coli
