[cytotoxin-associated gene A] In databanks the protein is being referred to also as cag26 [CAG pathogenicity island protein 26] or Cytotoxicity-associated immunodominant antigen.
This protein is encoded by strains of Helicobacter pylori that are highly associated with peptic ulcer disease and invasive gastric cancer (Perez-Perez et al, 1999). The protein is transferred to eukaryotic epithelial cells under the control of a variety of bacterial genes (Fischer et al, 2001) and is tyrosine-phosphorylated (Asahi et al, 2000). It modulates cellular functions. Churin et al (2003) have reported that CagA targets the HGF receptor (met) and enhances the motogenic response in cells
