[heparin binding growth-associated molecule] This protein of 15.3 kDa was isolated initially as a heparin binding protein from brain tissues of several species (see also: HBGF, heparin binding growth factors). It was described originally to possess mitogenic activity for vascular endothelial cells and fibroblasts, but this does not seem to be the case.
HB-GAM promotes growth of SW-13 cells in soft agar. The factor is identical with HBNF (heparin binding neurite-promoting factor).
For other neurotrophic factors see also: Neurotrophins.
