These cells are derived from a human adenocarcinoma of the adrenal cortex. They form only a few small colonies when suspended in soft agar at low cell densities (see also: Colony formation assay). The numbers and sizes of colonies increase dramatically following stimulation with serum-free conditioned medium of SW-13 cells, indicating the possibility of autocrine growth control. Some of this colony stimulating activity is due to IL1. The cells also secrete a factor biologically related to, or identical with PDGF and bFGF. They also secrete TGFe into the conditioned medium.
