Approved gene symbol: GNLY. The gene for this secreted protein was identified initially as T-cell activation gene 519 (T-lymphocyte activation gene 519, abbr. TLA519, 519), a gene expressed late after cell activation of T-cells by alloantigens or mitogens (Jongstra et al, 1987; Manning et al, 1992), similar to perforin and the granzymes. NKG5 is the NK-cell specific isoform of the protein, which arises by alternative splicing (Houchins et al, 1993).
