An acronym for 'granule enzymes' (Masson and Tschopp, 1987; Jenne and Tschopp, 1988). The name for a family of cytoplasmic granule-associated proteins that make up up to 90 % of the granules of cytotoxic T-cells and NK-cells and LAK cells. These enzymes are released when these cells bind to their target cells.
Granzyme-producing cells are activated T-cells, thymocytes (immature T-cells in the thymus), Gamma-Delta T-cells, NK-cells, NKT-cells. Some other cells types have been reported also to produce granzymes. NK-cells and gd T-cells
