These cells are a type of retinal ganglion cells (neurons) that can be distinguished from parasol cells based on morphological criteria. Garland cells have smaller perikarya and much less densely branched dendritic arbors than parasol cells (Polyak, 1941; Dowling and Boycott, 1966). Kolb et al (1992) have described two ganglion cells similar to garland cells, G8 and G16, in whole-mount preparations of the human retina.
Calkins DJ and Sterling P (2007) have quantified synaptic circuits for garland cells, showing that a complete garland cell (25 micrometer dendritic field) collects from approximately 40 cones via approximately 75 bipolar cells
