[platelet glycoprotein Ia] GPIa is one of the most prominent surface glycoproteins on platelets. It is identical with the alpha subunit of VLA-2 [very late activation antigen 2] (Pischel et al, 1988) and part of the glycoprotein complex GPIa / GPIIa on platelets. Kunicki et al (1988) have shown independently that platelet protein GPIa is the alpha chain of the extracellular matrix collagen receptor ECMR-2.
In the nomenclature of CD antigens GPIa has been given the designation CD49b.
