Established cell lines that entirely depend for their survival and proliferation on the continuous presence of one or more of growth factors (Ihle and Askew, 1989; Mire-Sluis and Thorpe, 1998; Drexler et al, 1997). Factor-dependent cell lines are capable of continuous growth in the presence of the growth factors and cytokines they require (see also: Colony formation assay; Delta assay; BMC). Withdrawal of the growth factors required for proliferation and/or survival usually leads to cell death by apoptosis.
