[Fibroblast growth factor receptor-like embryonic kinase] FREK is the chicken counterpart of the FGF receptor FGFR4.
This kinase has been identified originally in quails (Marcelle et al, 1994). Marcelle et al (1994) have reported that the receptor is highly expressed in the early myotome and, at later stages, in all skeletal muscles of the embryo. From E9 to hatching, expression in the muscles decreases dramatically but is maintained in satellite cells of adult muscles. Halevy et al (1994) have shown that the receptor is expressed in skeletal muscle satellite cells and epiphyseal growth plate chondrocytes and that the receptor binds bFGF.
The receptor is expressed at high levels in replicating myoblasts
