FMOD is an acidic 59 kDa keratan sulphate proteoglycan (hence the designations KSPG fibromodulin [Keratan sulfate proteoglycan fibromodulin] and collagen binding 59 kDa protein) (Antonsson et al, 1991) that has been shown to be involved in the regulation of the assembly of collagens into higher-order fibrils in connective tissues (Hedlund et al, 1994; Hedbom and Heinegård, 1993).
