Equarin is a secreted protein expressed exclusively in the lens of the embryonic chicken eye. Expression persists in the lens equatorial region in a high-dorsal-to-low-ventral gradient. Microinjection of equarin mRNA into Xenopus laevis embryos induces abnormal eye development (Mu et al (2003).
Jarrin et al (2012) have reported that a balance of FGF and BMP signals (bFGF, FGF8, BMP4) regulates cell cycle exit and Equarin expression in lens cells. Silencing of Equarin expression inhibits lens cell differentiation. Equarin directly binds to fibroblast growth factors and heparan sulfate proteoglycan
