[ECTV N1L protein; Mousepox virus N1L protein] This protein is encoded in the genome of the orthopoxvirus Ectromelia virus, the causative agent of mousepox. The protein is a virulence factor and its deletion attenuates respiratory infection in mice. Gene deleted viruses also show a striking deficiency of spreading from the lungs to the livers or spleens of infected mice. The attenuated phenotype is unaltered in mice deficient in Toll-like receptor (TLR) or RIG-I-like RNA helicase (RLH) signaling as well as in those missing the type 1 interferon receptor or lacking B-cells. The virus regins virulence in RAG-1(-/-) mice lacking mature B-cells and T-cells.
