[Toll-like receptors] Drosophila melanogaster Toll protein, encoded by CG5490, is a transmembrane receptor involved in the establishment of dorso-ventral polarity. The receptor also recognizes the invasion of microorganisms and plays a role in innate nonspecific immune responses. A variety of proteins homologous with toll-like receptors have been identified in humans (Rock et al, 1998; Takeuchi et al, 2000; Takeda et al, 2003). TLR proteins are characterised by an extracellular leucine-rich repeat domain and a cytoplasmic IL1 receptor-like region known as the TIR domain (Toll-IL1 receptor domain).
