[Wnt modulator in surface ectoderm] This secreted protein has been identified by Itasaki et al (2003). Sequence analysis shows that it is identical with Ectodin. The protein is being referred to also SOST-like and as SOSTDC1 [sclerostin domain-containing protein-1] (approved gene symbol) and has been identified independently as USAG-1 [uterine sensitization-associated gene-1].
Wise binds to the extracellular domain of the Wnt co-receptors LRP5 and LRP6 and inhibits Wnt signaling (Itasaki et al, 2003; Lintern et al, 2009). Wise can block Wnt-1 activity through
