General term (abbr. ERGs) used to describe genes rapidly and transiently expressed by cells within 0.5 - 2 hours in response to environmental stimuli (see also: gene expression).
ERG expression is low or absent in quiescent cells and transcription of these genes, unlike that of others, does not depend on de novo protein synthesis.
