Early response genes

General term (abbr. ERGs) used to describe genes rapidly and transiently expressed by cells within 0.5 - 2 hours in response to environmental stimuli (see also: gene expression).

Early response gene expression is low or absent in quiescent cells and transcription of these genes, unlike that of others, does not depend on de novo protein synthesis. Induction is unaffected by cycloheximide, suggesting that posttranslational modifications account for their activation. Expression of many Early response genes is superinduced when cells are treated with an inducer plus protein synthesis inhibitors. ... ... ... ...
