[endothelium leukocyte adhesion molecule 1] ELAM-1 (also: ELAM) is a cell surface glycoprotein expressed by cytokine-activated endothelium and mediates the adhesion of blood neutrophils. The expression of ELAM-1 in cultured human endothelial cells is induced by cytokines.
The gene encoding this protein has been cloned by Bevilacqua et al (1989). It is related to the MEL-14 lymphocyte cell surface homing receptor, and GMP-140, a membrane glycoprotein of platelet and endothelial secretory granules.
