EDIN

[epidermal cell differentiation inhibitor] This secreted factor of 27 kDa (212 amino acids) has been isolated from the extracellular products of Staphylococcus aureus E-1 (Sugai et al, 1990). The gene has been cloned by Inoue et al (1991). EDIN inhibits the calcium-induced terminal differentiation of cultured mouse and human keratinocytes. EDIN has been shown to ADP-ribosylate and inactivate small GTP-binding proteins (Rho GTPases) and to induce hyperplasia of epidermis (Sugai et al, 1992).

Yamada et al (2001) have suggested that acquired subglottic stenosis due to local infection of the trachea in intubated neonates is probably caused by delayed wound healing as the result of EDIN inhibition of epithelial cell migration.
